This Manaia Hook is named Toa, which means to be victorious.

This style of hook can be traced back to the Māori mythological origins of New Zealand where it is described that the demigod Maui 'fished' up the North Island of New Zealand (which is shaped like a stingray) with the jawbone of his grandmother, Muriranga whenua.

The fishhook signifies abundance, nourishment, and strength. As such it represents peace, prosperity, and good health. A fishhook is also a symbol that represents safe journey over water. Hence it is loved by travellers.

This Manaia Hook has an inlay of Paua for the eyes. The koru running up the neck of this carving represent the arising of our happiness.

The koru symbol is common in New Zealand and is inspired by the unfurling of the new fern fronds. Meanings associated with this are new growth, new beginnings and awakening.

TOA is a marvellous piece that will certainly draw attention and comment.
