The basis of this taonga is a manaia. A manaia is the profile of a tiki. This is symbolic of being half in this world and half in the spirit world. It is therefore known to be a messenger and bearer of messages. As such, they can be likened to heavenly, guardian angels or ministering spirits. Manaia can be adapted with other symbols and stylized to communicate different aspects, or meanings.
This manaia is named Ngakau o te Kainga which means Heart of the home.
The eye is an inlay of paua. This is symbolic of being able to see what is precious in our life. There are two more larger inlays of paua in the lower regions of the carving. These symbolise the qualities of love and wisdom. We need both to lead a balanced and healthy life.
Wings surround the top of the manaia. This represents protection and the reaching upwards to the divine abode. The wings interconnect and symbolise bringing together the spiritual life into the everyday world.
A flow of markings rise along the body of the Manaia. This represents the great ocean of life and all its twists and turns. The wing acts like a shield and covers us during times of tribulation. There are many types of shields that we use, some are weak, and others are strong, eternal even. The back continues this theme with the flow of koru rising along the main body. Meanings associated with this are the renewal of our innermost being, a new spiritual awakening.
The back also contains three inlays of paua. These represent our triune nature of body, mind and spirit. Together they constitute a state of wholeness.
