Wood

Artists from around the wider Pacific region have a long tradition in wood carving. Native trees were used by Māori to craft the massive Waka, or sea-going canoes, for the epic sea voyages undertaken to discover new lands and to fish.

Meeting houses, or Wharenui, are also adorned with intricate carvings which tell the stories of their people, so working in wood has a long tradition in South Pacific cultures.

In this collection we offer a selection of some of the very fine work in wood by our artists.
