A RURU TAKES FLIGHT!

Hand crafted by Kerry Thompson - RURU is an exceptional sculpture.

Carved in Marsden jade, with the creativity and attention to detail that we find in all of Kerry's carving, RURU is a beauty!

The jade is a top grade Marsden Flower, and Kerry has used the natural variation in the stone to add life to this work.

Kerry is an artist with a wonderful ability to use polish to accent his carvings. This is evident here - he has finished the stone in a silky satin matte. This brings out the natural variation in the jade while ensuring that the relief design is promoted. This gives the carving character and depth.

The eyes are pāua shell and again, Kerry has taken care to use shell that produces an 'owl-like' stare.

RURU is ready to fly home... will she land on your doorstep?

An exceptional sculpture, by one of New Zealand's finest carvers of jade.

The significance of the Ruru in Māori culture.

The ruru, also known as the morepork owl, holds special significance in Māori culture as a symbol of both wisdom and the spirit world. This nocturnal bird is considered a guardian and a spiritual messenger, often believed to carry messages from ancestors or the gods. The ruru’s distinctive call, echoing through the night, is thought to be an omen or a sign, sometimes signaling impending events or conveying the presence of a loved one’s spirit. For Māori, the ruru embodies a connection between the physical and spiritual realms, serving as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all life. Its appearance and sound in the darkness evoke both reverence and caution, and it is often honored in carvings, art, and oral traditions.
