PEKAPEKA

Hand crafted by Kerry Thompson - PEKAPEKA is a work of art, an exceptional sculpture hand carved from a dark, mystical piece of New Zealand kokopu jade.

A lovely design - a striking Pekapeka pair watching and protecting their surrounds.

The stone is phenomenal! Half of one side is a pale, sage green colour, the other is a gorgeous deep emerald green. The eyes are pāua shell and here, Kerry has taken care to use matching shell. He has chosen pieces with central points that give them a beautiful intensity.

PEKAPEKA are named after a native New Zealand bat, a tiny creature that flies at night and holds quite some spiritual significance. Māori legend believes these bats are a physical manifestation of the mythical, night-flying bird - the Hokioi.

Carved in Kokopu jade, with the creativity and attention to detail that we find in all of Kerry's carving, PEKAPEKA is a beauty!

The attention to the finish here is outstanding! Kerry has polished the stone to a soft satin matte. This gives the carving character and depth, and promotes the natural beauty of the stone.

The significance of the Pekapeka in Māori culture:

The pekapeka, or native bat, holds a unique place in Māori culture as a symbol of adaptability, resilience, and mystery. Unlike many other animals in Aotearoa (New Zealand), the pekapeka is one of only two native land mammals, making it both rare and sacred.

Māori regard the pekapeka as a link between the human and supernatural worlds, and it is sometimes seen as a kaitiaki, or guardian, offering protection and guidance. The bat’s ability to navigate through darkness and move between realms of light and shadow is seen as a metaphor for journeys in life, resilience in challenging times, and the unseen powers of nature.

The Pekapeka's elusive nature has inspired legends created a place in Māori carving and storytelling, reminding people to respect the mysteries of the natural world and the wisdom found in creatures that may be hidden from view.
