HIRIWA KĀKĀRIKI - Green Steel

HIRIWA KĀKĀRIKI is carved from a lovely piece of local New Zealand Tangiwai.

Tangiwai is the most ancient form of pounamu and takes its name from the Māori 'tangi' - to cry and 'wai' - water, 'tears of sorrow'. It is the perfect stone for this marvellous pendant.

Aaron is a new artist for us and we are particularly impressed with the quality of his work.  HIRIWA KĀKĀRIKI is a fine example of this - he has given the stone a mirror polish - only possible when working with high quality jade and applying an enormous attention to detail. This is best seen in the brief video we have taken of the piece revolving.

HIRIWA KĀKĀRIKI is a beautiful piece of traditional jewellery.

This piece is suspended from a 3-plait black adjustable cord with a traditional black lashing.

The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.

The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
