EYES ON ME

A beautiful New Zealand Jade Tiki!

EYES ON ME is a medium size, carved from a very dark piece of New Zealand pounamu. The stone is wonderful. It has been carved from the outer rind of a boulder in towards the centre. You can see the pale green/orange shades at the top the head, typical of the highly mineralised outer skin of a jade boulder. The head and body are a beautiful deep, dark green. A beautiful piece of stone, carved in a traditional style.

EYES ON ME is beautifully carved. Look closely at the photos and the video and you will see detail and variation in the stone that isn't immediately obvious. The design is a traditional one. Pāua Shell eyes, hands braced on the thighs, the inverted V-shape representing the central rib cage, and that glorious, protruding belly.

A beautiful tiki - perfectly imperfect. This is a worthy representation  of a very traditional and immediately recognisable design.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE TIKI....

The tiki is a well recognised symbol in Maori culture, but also has historical roots in Hawaiian and wider Polynesian cultures. It is believed to symbolise fertility, and was often worn by women who believed that it would promote fertility. Pregnant women wore tiki to promote a healthy and easy birth. They would wear the piece during the birth - and recite karakia, prayers, to the tiki asking for assistance in the birth of their child.

These pendants were traditionally highly valued and wearers were seen to possess clarity of thought, loyalty, great inner knowledge and strength of character.

The tiki is believed by some to have come from the stars, and was regarded as the 'first man'. He was (and still is) believed to have a positive influence on fertility, and to bring the wearer good luck.
