KINGFISHER
A spectacular sculptural Matau, carved by Kerry Thompson.
This is an outstanding artwork carved in New Zealand Argillite. A matau sculpture presented on a stand made from a chip of Argillite.
KINGFISHER - ONE ONLY - Please view the video of Kerry Thompson briefly explaining his work of art.
Kerry has used a dual polish - parts a high shine and parts a soft matte - this lends this matau depth and a provides a wonderful contrast that is picked up when the light strikes stone's planes.
One side has a flowing kowhaiwhai design running around the edge from the hook through the tip. The other side has two fish carved into the side. This is a superb example of New Zealand art.
What a superb sculptural piece by a Master carver and artist. The base is in and of itself a work of beauty - New Zealand argillite in its natural form, a tactile work of art with a polished, smooth underside! KINGFISHER sits beautifully.
KINGFISHER is a large and eye-catching Matau - a fabulous display of New Zealand traditional art at its finest.
KINGFISHER is a fantastic showcase piece!
The Hook: The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
PLEASE NOTE: the hook slots into a brass rod that is fixed to the Argillite stand. We have not glued this, preferring to leave it removable so that you can position the matau on the base in the position that you find most attractive.
We will include our 'Kia Ora' card, which explains the meaning behind the Matau/Hook design.
