MARAMA O OKU KANOHI: Light of my eyes

We are absolutely delighted to have this outstanding piece available. MARAMA O OKU KANOHI is a large and beautifully carved piece of jewellery, parts very traditional, and with some wonderful personal touches from the artist.

This is a beautiful piece, carved with a great deal of care and thought. The artist describes it's meaning as follows...

This Taonga is named Marama o oku kanohi. This translates to 'Light of my eyes'. It is a combination of pounamu, bone, and copper, with eyes of paua.

The stone is the beautiful Douglas Creek pounamu sourced from the West Coast. It's one of my favourites to work with. Pounamu has great strength. Being at the bottom of the carving, it symbolises having a strong base or foundation upon which to rely. Being grounded in love and truth.

Rather than relying on our own strength, we are encouraged to draw on the spiritual strength from the peace giver. The copper inlay between the bone and pounamu represents a conductive layer between the divine and us.

The bone contains a Manaia. This represents our spiritual nature. This is where our true nourishment is located. When made alive, it flows with inner harmony, strength, and love. Manaia are also seen as messengers from the spirit realm.

The kowhaiwhai pattens represents wholeness and vitality. From the state of wholeness, we are made strong. It suggests a fresh infilling after a time of trial. There is a wing that contains koru above the head. This represents the unfolding light upon our spiritual eyes.

MARAMA O OKU KANOHI is lovingly packaged in a woven kete pouch and is provided with a brown adjustable cord. Also included in your package, a note from the carver about your original work of Art to Wear.
