A wonderful, traditional matau pendant carved in a striking piece of New Zealand Kawakawa Jade. A beautifully designed, and carved piece by Rueben Tipene, chunky and gorgeous! The first photo is backlit to show how stunning this piece of stone is.
Rueben has finished the stone in a soft, satin polish. Very appropriate for this pendant because it is a close finish to the way these would have been worked and polished in the very distant past.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
