This koru with a hei matau (hook) is a modern take on a traditional design. Koru - harmony and eternal movement. Hei matau - strength, good luck and safe travel over water. A double sided beauty, hand made by Ana Krakosky.
This pendant is beautifully carved and the jade is exceptional - it has fabulous variation and lovely colouring. If you like flower jade, this is a great example of this rare stone.
HARMONY will be delivered lovingly packaged in a woven kete pouch.
A little about the traditional symbolism in these designs:
The twist carving with its crisscross form represents the many paths of life and love and as such is regarded as the original eternity symbol. The single twist carving represents the joining together of two people for eternity. Its shape describes the way relationships shift, sometimes moving apart, but coming together as a couple share their lives.
The Koru: the Māori word for 'loop'. The spiral shaped koru design represents an unfolding silver fern frond. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to ‘going back to the beginning’. The unfurling frond itself is symbolic of new life, new beginnings, hope and rebirth.
The Hook: The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
The shape is streamlined, gloriously curved and polished to a rich, matte sheen. Take a look at the video and you will appreciate the artistry of this beautiful piece.
