FREEDOM FLYER - a wonderful matau pendant for adventurous travellers!

Carved from beautiful, semi-translucent kawakawa jade. The colour palette in this piece is fabulous! A sprinkle of pale clouds on the top, descending into a deep, bright green through the body. Carved for us by Ross Crump.

A finely-carved Matau (hook) crafted from New Zealand pounamu. This pendant is carved from a gorgeous green jade - the photos reveal the wonderful mineral inclusion that produces the swirls of pale clouds in this rare stone. You can wear this beauty either side!

Also very nice, is the polished finish - it makes for a light-catching piece and is silky smooth to wear.

FREEDOM FLYER is lovingly packaged in a woven kete pouch.

Ross has incorporated a koru heart in the centre, combining two shapes well-known in the South Pacific, and giving it an interesting symbology:

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THESE DESIGNS...

The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.

The Koru: the Māori word for 'loop'. The spiral shaped koru design represents an unfolding silver fern frond. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to ‘going back to the beginning’.  The unfurling frond itself is symbolic of new life, new beginnings, hope and rebirth.
