This exquisite pendant is a wonderful representation of a flowing manaia, hand-carved from rare New Zealand inanga jade by Ross Crump. These manaia have the head of a bird and the tail of a fish. The central body is decorated with a beautifully carved koru - all important symbols in the South Pacific.

Ross has incorporated a koru spiral in the tail which gives it an interesting symbology:

The Manaia: a mythical being believed to be the invisible light, or aura, surrounding a person. They represent spiritual power and are believed to be the guide that leads the spirits to heaven. They are worn to guide and protect.

The Koru: the Māori word for 'loop'. The spiral shaped koru design represents an unfolding silver fern frond. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to ‘going back to the beginning’.  The unfurling frond itself is symbolic of new life, new beginnings, hope and rebirth.
