RITORITO
This is a beautiful piece and was carved for us by Ric Moor. The stone is a beautiful Marsden Flower Jade. It was carved across the width of a boulder - you can see the colour change from the paler orange through green and then into an orange colour again on the hilt. The colours on the ends result from the mineral environment the stone formed in creating a palette of colours that is unique to each individual carving. This is a lovely example of this stone.
Ric has carved a reversed pattern into the butt of the handle - this represents the family, the whānau. The parents and children on the outside moving into those who have gone before us - our grandparents and older ancestors.
This piece was designed as a club style weapon. In the hand it feels very solid - the weight is distributed towards the front producing what would once have been a very powerful and effective striking weapon. A lot of the weight is carried in the blade, well forward of the grip, so it feels heavier than RANGIPŌ.
This was a weapon of brute force, used for close quarters fighting to inflict maximum damage.
Measurements of RITORITO are: 16.5 inches (420mm) long and 4.3 inches (110mm) at the widest part of the blade.
