Hand carved bone matau pendant. Artist: YURI TERENYI
A strong pendant with tons of character. These were carved for us by Yuri Terenyi - they are a finely carved design with a form that is a little different from the typical matau shape.
The cord we've used for these wonderful Matau are Wapiti Brown and the length is adjustable.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
Bone is porous and will absorb body oils. It will take on a golden colour over time. Local belief would say that the pendant absorbs the wearer's mana (spirit), and becomes a part of you.
Please note - the photo shown in the hand is for size reference only.
We deliver this pendant on a hand plaited, adjustable cord and will include our 'Kia Ora' card, which explains the meaning behind the hook design.
