WHALE IN A WAVE is an exquisite jade sculpture carved from high quality Marsden jade. This piece exhibits this stone's vibrant colour and beautiful translucency. Ana has created a piece that captures the graceful movement of a whale emerging from the waves, with the water rendered to create a sense of dynamic energy. The jade's natural translucency allows light to pass through, giving the piece a luminous, refined quality that is quite captivating. It also reveals an inner composition that Ana has integrated into the sculptures design.

The design of the waves draws inspiration from The Great Wave off Kanagawa, the iconic Japanese woodblock print by Hokusai. This influence is reflected in the dramatic, curling shapes of the waves, which echo the power and elegance of the original artwork.

The sculpture blends this traditional Japanese aesthetic with the timeless beauty of jade, resulting in a harmonious and culturally rich work.

Mounted on a base crafted from rata burr, a native New Zealand wood, the sculpture is elevated both literally and artistically. The natural patterns of the rata burr provide a stark contrast to the smooth, polished surface of the jade, enhancing the overall presentation and adding a touch of organic warmth.

The whale holds a special place in the hearts of us down here in the South Pacific. .

Legend has it that the whale has protected Māori journeying in their waka (canoes) which is why these symbols are often gifted to people undertaking journeys, or perhaps starting a new chapter in their lives.
