PŪTŌRINO - a stunning hand carved one off, engraved Bone Flute.

While traditionally, PŪTŌRINO were carved from wood, this piece is carved from bone and has been stained with a homemade dye. It is a decorative, display piece but also a fully functional flute.

We have had the wooden box custom made for this exquisite work of art. The lid of the box converts to display the flute and rests on top of the box.

A little about the traditional significance of the pūtōrino:

A pūtōrino is a traditional Māori wind instrument unique to Aotearoa New Zealand, known for its distinctive shape and dual-purpose functionality. Carved from native woods such as māhoe, tōtara, or mataī, the pūtōrino resembles the body of a moth or cocoon, symbolizing the pūrerehua (moth) in Māori culture. It features an elongated, hollow body with a mouthpiece at one end and one or more holes along its length.

What sets the pūtōrino apart is its ability to produce both flute-like and trumpet-like sounds, depending on how it is played. When blown gently, it creates a soft, melodic tone reminiscent of a kōauau (Māori flute). With a stronger breath, it produces a resonant, powerful sound like a trumpet. This versatility allowed the pūtōrino to serve both as a musical instrument for storytelling and ceremonial purposes and as a signaling device.

The pūtōrino is also deeply symbolic and connected to Māori spirituality. It is said to embody the voice of Hineraukatauri, the goddess of music, who is associated with the pūrerehua. Carvings and decorations on the instrument often reflect this spiritual significance, making each pūtōrino a unique and sacred taonga (treasure). Today, the pūtōrino is celebrated as an integral part of Māori musical heritage and cultural identity.
